The lists are getting shorter

And not just Christmas lists - oh no, far from it.

I've just realised that I've been using a truly awful font to type this, but now I'm trying Courier for a change.

So, what's been happening?

Well, I've been working through the longest to-do list I've had in ages, and next up is some stuff around recording video footage for my 2016 project, which I'm getting quite excited about, if I can pull it together - and the indications are that I can, as I have some cracking support from a mate.

The health thing pushes on - I'm planning some further sprints, and have a vehicle for recruiting technical help, so looking rosy on that front, too.

All in all, it looks like 2015 is going to end very nicely indeed!

Databases, information and to-do lists

Right, back on the old FreeBSD Thinkpad for this one.

First up, been playing with arangoDB as a database, having toyed with others such as Neo4j, and have had some success both getting it onto my VM and onto a VM on my desktop machine.

Both of these are running CentOS7, which so far I am liking (especially with KDE, I'm afraid I just can't get my head around GNOME, sorry).

So next step is to get my health data in there (which means I will be spending some quality time with the manual...), and from there building some kind of a query front end, whether that is in JavaScript or PHP as yet I know not. It could even be in Ruby...

Which reminds me that I have to finish my Ruby online course, when I get a spare hour, and then I want to do a course on C/C++ if I get the chance (although I have less use for these at present).

Podcast wise I have some editing and uploading to do, and I want to put together a plan for 2016 - probably less regular, but with stronger (that is, more substantial, not more adult-themed) content.

I also have a dormant YouTube channel sitting around, which next year I will start throwing some content onto - I also need to put together some guitar "music" (I use the term loosely) and get that on the 'Tube, too.

Finally, I have loads and loads more to plan - but you know what? I actually feel like I am achieving things again!

COOL!

Canalside stroll

Took a stroll with the dog this morning, and was amazed to see that the canalside had been cleared of nettles.

Looks much better.

Progress is slow, but it is progress

So, what has been a-happening in my crazy world?

Well, I now have a virtual Centos server up and running, with KDE installed and a few other bits and bobs, with some slightly temperamental (at the moment) remote access. Seems to work from Kubuntu, but nothing else. Yet.

I've also managed to corral some data sources for healthcare data, now it's just a case of trying to work out how to get the information into my RIAK KV store. Again, this will come.

Also working on some analysis tools - still fancy having a go with Talend and Tableau, but a bit of a distance to go before I can really try them out because I need the data in RIAK first!

Egg... chicken...

Other than that, playing some guitar, sort of practising some card handling and stuff (need to do more of this), and generally tinkering. Also working on a space programme, but check out the SLUG blog for more on this.

That's all for now, I think...

Morning has broken

Another early start, still dark outside, in an attempt to get the working day over and done with.

I really must write a proper post soon...

FAR TOO LONG

Oh my word

yet again I have failed to keep up the activity on this blog, for far too long.

OK, so here is a bullet list of stuff I have been/am working on, in no particular order:
  • Documentation for a web service for professionals
  • Amateur satellites (!)
  • RedHat certification
  • BSD certification
  • Epimetric
  • Democratic systems modernisation
  • Open news reporting/citizen journalism
  • Film-making
  • Learning Ruby
  • Job applications (!)
  • Podcasting

And that's just the start.

Sorry for the brevity!

Increased activity

I know, I know, it doesn't matter what I say here, the reality is that I've been incredibly lazy when it comes to updating this blog.

So, what have I been doing?

Well, for starters I've managed to improve my overhand shuffle and card control - slowly - so the magic practise is paying off.

On the guitar front I've beefed up my pedal board, and done some really cool stuff to get better as a player, so that is, I feel, coming together a bit. There's still an awfully long way to go, but it is getting better!

Errr... work has been OK, I've plugged a couple of job applications in which has been pretty cool, and worked through some project ideas which I hope will surface sooner rather than later. I just need to get some collaborators on board to really make them work.

Other than that? Do you want blood?! Podcasts?!

Well, I've played with FreeBSD a bit more, and really like it - I even managed to rescue a broken system last night (I am writing this on it, so there is the proof), acquired a server - not set up yet - and done a bunch of domestic-y stuff, but nothin particularly newsworrthy on its own.

Stay tuned.

A new to-do list

With a mere 33 items for this week.

Already ticked a couple off, though!

Database joy

Well, it's been a short time since last I wrote.

More guitar playing, including a short video on YouTube to show off an evolving effects board, some fiddling around with bits and bobs of writing, and some work on Epimetric.

I've been tinkering with an SQLite database, building tables for practice postcodes and prescriptions, although it looks like I'm going to have to split some source data to import it on my Thinkpad.

As ever, please help out if you can.

Been a long time coming

Yes, indeed it has.

So, what have I been up to?

Well, there's The KO Cast podcast, talking about wrestling (WWE, TNA and British wrestling occasionally) - old episodes are available from me if you ask nicely!

I've learnt something about NoSQL databases lately, which is hopefully going to help resurrect the currently slumbering Epimetric project.

Other than that, I've moved jobs and generally had a fairly good Christmas and New Year, other than perforating an eardrum which has caused me a (hopefully temporary) loss of hearing in one ear.

Oh yeah, I've been practising some guitar (noise stuff coming soon!), building an FX pedal board, doing some magic practise, outlining a couple of books and generally tinkering with things.

I'm still finding FreeBSD and PCBSD on a couple of my laptops absolutely awe-inspiring, and can't get enough of MESS and the emulation of old home computers and things.

Everything is awesome!
