Guitar and things

Broke out the Yamaha RGX tonight... amazingly it was pretty much in tune, despite the fact it has been several months since it was last out of its case.

It never ceases to amaze me just how good this early/mid 90's Indonesian axe sounds - it is just fabulous.

Rattled through a couple of Metallica songs along with TuxGuitar on the desktop, loads of fun!

SD card woes

How annoying. My phone has decided that the SD card is broken and so won't access any of the music files on it.

Cue 20 minutes fixing my ringtones and so forth, putting them from a PC onto phone storage. Harumph.

An Oddly Compelling podcast

Last night (Sunday 23rd March 2014) marked the recording of episode 00 of the Oddly Compelling podcast.

I've done a quick edit down to around 29 minutes, and sent the mp3 & ogg to my co-host for approval before I add on a quick intro music sting and an outro piece and the upload to Soundcloud.

As soon as this is done I'll throw a link on here so everyone can listen and hate every second!

Friday night

And I feel worn out.

Assembled a bedside cabinet flatpack earlier, which was a satisfying way to spend 40 minutes.

Did a bit of magic-y card handling, cleared some podcasts (still got loads to listen to), applied for some jobs, cooked myself some sausages and, er...

Oh yeah, checked out broadband packages (turns out it's worth sticking with current provider), contacted my local MP via my union, booked the dog into kennels for later in the year and had a nice bottle of Wychwood Hobgoblin beer.

And for good measured checked out Gentoo as well! Still not convinced I'd prefer it to FreeBSD or PCBSD, but worth checking again (I'm on my OpenSUSE machine, by the way, tonight).

Quiet night in

All is well at present.

Back on the FreeBSD Thinkpad tonight, done a quick pkg upgrade, and before I switch off I'll check if there is a system update.

Other than that, not a lot to report, but just wanted to keep on posting regularly.

Research under way

First off, I found Epicollect via Yellowhammer dialects (a fine project - please support it), which looks really interesting and useful for my tree-ident idea.

Second, I've done a bit of thinking about Loqualia, and typed up an outline which I can start to flesh out.

Third, I've started some thinking about the Gaul, and have an outline for what I want to know about it.

Fourth (yes, the list goes on!), I've written this blog updated.

Fifth - a plug for my Cafepress shop! Please buy something!

Sixth, thoughts about Mother's Day and possible gifts like this or this.

Finally, some guitar strumming earlier which I really enjoyed, even if the batteries in my Pocket Pod had given up... GRRRR!

So much to do

Just spent a cosy 10 minutes writing out my to-do list for the coming week. I keep promising myself I will move to an electronic one, but still haven't got around to it.

I could complain that there simply isn't time to fit everything in, but the truth is that there is, if only I used some sensible time management like putting proper slots into my days set aside for specific activities.

I'm already doing this to an extent - I have recurring reminders for guitar and magic every evening, and a few other things I book myself out for using my Google calendar, which handily syncs to my phone.

Main things this week will be to clear some things in the early evenings, and if I can prioritising some of the bigger items and breaking them down into more feasible 10-minute slots, which is possible but just requires some serious will.

Spring is here

I know this because I mowed the lawn for the first time this year today.

Another night, another OS

Well, here I am on the PCBSD machine.

WOW, it is so cool. Smooth and so east to use (thanks in part to KDE I think, which is a fabulous DE). Only difficulty I am having is that the cursor left key is broken, so I need to think about buying a new keyboard and fitting that.

I'm also thinking now of ditching Ubuntu 12.04 - it just isn't what I am feeling at the moment - from the 17" Acer and either going for OpenBSD or Gentoo.

I must be a masochist...

Any thoughts?

Quiet evening

A very short post just to let everyone know that I'm having a quiet evening.

Other than that not a lot to say, really.

Stay tuned for more - podcast recording due on Sunday...

The start of another week

Monday is over. More or less.

I'm back on the FreeBSD Thinkpad tonight, for a change.

Can't figure out why it should complain about conflicts when I run pkg upgrade -fy, but I'm sure it will all become clear in time.

If anyone knows... please tell me.

Other than that I have slowly started ticking a few things off on my (new) to-do list, which is good, although I always feel guilty about the failure to use the rather brilliant taskwarrior or something similar.

Did a bit of widdly-widdly stuff on the Ibanez, earlier, which was fun, and I'll try and fit in some card handling later, too.

Practically speaking

I really don't know what has come over me today.

First, a stroll outside.

Then, back indoors and set to work on assembling a bedside cabinet and a chest of drawers from Argos. A bit flimsy, to be honest, not as good as the IKEA stuff, but rattled through the build pretty quickly.

Alongside this a load of furniture moving, tidying and sorting, resulting in a car full of junk to go to the skip tomorrow, as well as some charity shop donations.

Not managed to get any guitar practice in, and only a little card handling stuff, but tomorrow normal service shall be resumed.

Yesterday, by the way, I had a really useful chat about my film script - yep, I have one - and some other media projects which I plan to push ahead more over the next few weeks.

Next Sunday sees the first recording of the "Oddly compelling" podcast, too - keep an eye/ear out for that one.

Password woes

Lo and behold I have forgotten a password...

Ah well, I'll just have to reset it on another machine.

I'm on my FreeBSD Thinkpad tonight, for a change. Seems to be happily up to date, so not going to do anything to break it!

More tomorrow, all being well.

Monday, 3 March 2014

I've been thinking about the Gaul lately, and Googled it this evening.

I was interested to see this story in the Hull Daily Mail, as I've not been there in a while I'm a bit out of the loop on this one.

Not sure what more I can say on this one.

Sunday, 2 March 2014

It's raining.

Quite a lot.

I know this because the dog has just barked to be let out, and it's my duty to escort her outside to prevent her/discourage her from barking randomly at every slight environmental noise, and this is not welcome at 9:30 at night.

Done a bit of guitar-y stuff today, had a play with Rosegarden (can't tell if it's using my Digitech interface yet, will have to play further to confirm), got frustrated at forgetting how to use Ableton Live, and had a go at some card sleights (really basic ones, but starting to see a little improvement from where I was!).

What else? Well the plan this week is to pound the keyboards to write a load of stuff down that has been buzzing around my head, and try and actually create something!

I've also been looking at portable digital recorders... I think that's what I might break into my savings for!
